The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on October 20 announced a $22.3 million project to help the Afghan Ministry of Public Works maintain Afghanistan’s roads.
The three-year project will help the Ministry create three departments: a road authority to oversee maintenance and construction; a road fund to provide financing; and a transportation institute to train staff.
USAID officially selected AMEC Environment and Infrastructure as the implementing partner.
“This project will help strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Public Works to operate and maintain Afghanistan’s national road network,” said Mission Director Bill Hammink. “We are committed to continuing our partnership with the Afghan government to improve the country’s transportation infrastructure and provide safe roads for the people of Afghanistan.”
Since 2002, USAID has invested more than $2 billion in Afghanistan’s road network by building or rehabilitating more than 2,000 kilometers of roads. In recent years, USAID has shifted emphasis from road construction to supporting the Afghan government’s ability to operate and maintain a modern road network.
